Arc Shield

Commissions and Opportunities

All Souls' members offer their talents and gifts for ministry within the parish family and the wider community. Elected lay leaders on the Vestry chair each commission, which organizes the parish's efforts. Articles in the monthly Rubric list meetings, dates, times and places. You can help! Call the church office, (619) 223-6394.

Acolytes

From the Greek "to follow," an acolyte is a vested minister who assists the clergy during worship. Boys, girls, and adults young and old are invited to undergo training and scheduling for this ministry.

Altar Guild

The people who do the "behind-the-scenes" work in the sacristy are also known as "sacristans." Preparing the church, altar and font and flowers, communion vessels and vestments: this is the essential work for every Sunday and Holy Day. Men and women are all welcome to serve.

Christian Formation

This commission oversees education programs: Sunday School and Adult Sunday Forums, workshops, lectures and visiting speakers.

Communications

This commission coordinates and conveys information, handbooks, procedures, websites, directories, marketing and announcements that need to take place within the parish and outward into the community.

Fellowship

This commission hosts social events that strengthen community, welcome visitors, and underscore the liturgical season. It coordinates the coffee hour after Sunday services, allowing parishioners to linger and visit. Parishioners help the commission prepare and implement events like the Epiphany party, Mardi Gras, the Pentecost picnic and the all-parish retreat.

Lay Eucharistic Ministers

The women and men who minister the chalice at the Holy Eucharist, or who carry the sacrament from the parish altar to the sick and shut-in must be trained at the diocesan School for Ministry in order to be certified. Inquire at the parish office, or ask one of the clergy about this.

Lectors

Readilng scripture at the liturgy is a privilege which is extended to anyone willing to undergo some minimal training.

Music Ministry

Parish members are always welcome to join the vocal and occasional bell choirs. Anyone proficient on a musical instrument is encouraged to participate in the musical life of the parish. The choir sings Sundays, September through June, at the principal liturgy (10:15 a.m.) and on special feasts. Choir practice is held every Thursday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Help is always invited for our public Concert Series, which needs ushers, set-up and help with receptions and publicity.

Membership

No need to sit on the outside looking in. All Souls' is about community. Newcomers are invited to dinners. Newcomers are involved in the life of the parish as they feel comfortable and are able. They learn parish history, get acquainted with the clergy and parish programs, and tour parish buildings.

Outreach

Whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers and sisters, that you do unto me." This commission supports a number of programs in San Diego County, as well as several ministries in Kenya, including the work done by Gerry and Nancy Hardison.

Pastoral Care

This commission takes intentional and personal care of parishioners: lay Eucharistic ministers, calls on the housebound, healing ministry, receptions following funerals, and intercessory prayer for those on our prayer list.

Properties

This commission coordinates maintenance and development of church property, thus designating use of funds in the annual budget. Our sexton organizes regularly scheduled parish workdays. A Columbarium committee oversees management and maintenance of this sacred space.

Stewardship

This commission is dedicated to raising pledged income, time and talent for the well-being of the parish community.

Ushers

Welcoming, guiding and assisting worshipers are the essential duties of ushers, on Sundays and Holy Days. Our members are urged to respond positively when recruited for this task.

Worship

This commission works closely with the rector and the music director to plan public worship in the church. Worship follows the Lectionary and the sacramental life of the liturgical year, helping the community live deeply its seasons and cycles. The commission also oversees the Altar Guild.
