All Souls’ Episcopal Church
My Goddaughter has just finished hiking the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine; a journey of some 2400 miles. She began the hike with one friend and ended it with many, all of them strangers at first becoming friends through sharing a common journey.
So it is with a spiritual journey with God and within a faith community. A person arrives as a stranger and then finds friends along the journey. Each person begins with God where they are, developing a deeper and deeper unity (communion) as he or she travels. And like a hike in the woods there are easy and hard paths, hills, streams, even brambles and thorns. It is something best done with others.
All Souls’ offers a gathered community of people all on this spiritual hike together. To grow closer to God, the terrain of our hike looks like this:
Worship times
- We gather, as Jesus invited us to, to share in Holy Communion. It is a service of finding peace with one another and God and entering into a spiritual union with God. We have a special Children’s Chapel to guide children along their own developing journey.
- We pray on our own using the resources of the Book of Common Prayer (BCP) or other resources that touch our spirit. The BCP is a unique part of the Episcopal Anglican flavor of Christianity because of offers us ways to pray for all the times of our life.
- We join in deepening our knowledge of God through Bible Study, topical classes, book groups, etc.
- We gather for fellowship and fun. We enjoy good food as well as time together with a monthly Parish Breakfast, delicious treats after worship and special dinners and parties throughout the year.
- Touching the joy we find in our journey we find ways to reach out to those in need, within and without the Parish. Folks at All Souls are involved in many community service groups, our gift seems to be in spreading ourselves around to help lots of other projects rather than all doing one thing. together. We do have cutting edge ministries to Seniors on the Point and to more than 20,000 AIDs orphans in Kenya. On the third Wednesday of each month we prepare and serve a dinner in Ocean Beach at the Episcopal Church Center.
